Biographical
Andrew, orginally from Halifax, graduated from the University of King's College and then received his LLB from Dalhousie University Law School. He was called to the Bar in Ontario in 1985 and spent his entire 21 years in civil litigation practice with Benson Percival Brown. He appeared in all courts in Ontario, including in bilingual matters in the Superior Court of Justice and the Court of Appeal and was an instructor in the Advocacy and Civil Litigation sections of the Ontario Bar Admission Course. He worked as a mediator in conjunction with his law practice from 2004 until 2006, when he was appointed a Master (Associate Judge since 2021) in the Ontario Superior Court of Justice.
As a Master/Associate Judge, Andrew established a reputation for being extremely well-prepared for all hearings and demonstrated a strong commitment to helping the parties achieve settlements at the approximately 1,500 settlement conferences that he conducted. His practice experience in personal injury and insurance law was particularly helpful in mediating settlements of cases of that nature and he also developed expertise in resolving many other types of litigation, particularly employment law matters. His ability to communicate with francophone and Spanish-speaking litigants in their own language often proved helpful in cultivating their trust in the process and ultimately achieving settlements of their cases.
Following his retirement from the Court in September, 2023, Andrew has worked with Schmidt Mediation Group where he has mediated MVA and occupier's liability claims, wrongful dismissal actions, professional negligence claims, disputes between family members over property ownership, and various commercial litigation matters. He has continued to serve on panels for CLE events and as a guest lecturer in Civil Procedure at Lincoln Alexander School of Law (Toronto Metropolitan University).
In his leisure time, Andrew is an avid tennis player and birdwatcher, enjoys travelling and studying languages (most recently Italian), and is a devoted fan of Canada's national soccer teams.
