Biographical
Louise Barrington is a chartered arbitrator and accredited mediator, legally qualified in Ontario, New York and England & Wales. A multicultural Canadian, she also holds a British passport. She frequently acts as sole arbitrator, co-arbitrator named by parties and by institutions, and has chaired or sat as sole arbitrator on ICC, ICDR, SIAC, HKIAC and ad hoc panels. Louise has resolved international disputes concerning construction, franchises, shareholder disputes, banking, international sales and CISG, wrongful dismissal and distribution agreements.
She has taught international, commercial, construction and arbitration law on the faculties of University of Ottawa, King’s College London, City University of Hong Kong, Chinese Univeristy of Hong Kong and has frequently taught as an adjunct at LaTrobe in Melbourne and Georgetown in Washington and Osgoode Law School in Toronto. Ms Barrington established ICC Asia in Hong Kong, the first-ever regional office of the International Chamber of Commerce. In that role she acted as an arbitration resource for businesses from Pakistan to New Zealand.
She also lends her expertise to the legal profession, training and assessing arbitrators, and by consulting with law firms on international arbitration practice.​ Louise founded and continues to direct the annual Vis East International Commercial Arbitration Moot in Hong Kong and is the co-founder and an honorary president of ArbitralWomen. She developed the ArbitralWomen Diversity Toolkit and is a founding member of REAL (Racial Equality in Arbitration Law.) She is active in the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators, having held elected office for years in Asia served three terms on the Education Committee in London. She was for over 15 years a member of ICC’s arbitration committees in Canada and Hong Kong, and chaired its Small Claims Guidelines committee. Ms Barrington speaks English and French fluently, plus conversational Spanish, a little German and a few words of Mandarin.
